Spring In 2nd Grade

This spring will be an exciting time in Room 102 at Boise Eliot Humboldt.  This Friday will be a busy time for us.  We will have Spring Pictures, and Artist in Residence and a field trip to Jefferson High School. Let's hope for good weather.  Picture packets will be coming home on Monday.  This is a free dress day for the students.  Ms. Oakes will be our Artist in Residence this year.  She will be coming to our classroom a total of four times to work with the children on a clay project around our science theme of animals and habitats.  After her presentation we will immediately board the bus to head over to Jefferson for their Sustainability Fair.  The children will be rotating between stations and learn from the high school students.  This is sure to be a busy and productive day.

Below I have hi-lited the BIG ideas in all of our subject area over the next couple of weeks.

I hope you enjoy getting caught up on the LIFE of a 2nd grader!

Language Arts:  In second grade the children are really starting to get a grasp of reading to learn.  They have been exposed to a wide variety of informational text.  We have spent some time learning about the life cycles of different animals.  During our Language Arts time for the past couple of weeks we have been looking at main idea, details and what a good paragraph consists of.  As always we are still working on punctuation, fluency, spelling and capitalization.

Math:  Out unit of study right now is called Branching into Larger Numbers: Money and Place Value.  We all wrote story problems last week about presents and parcels and next week we will solve our friends problems.  We have also spent some time with adding and subtracting bigger numbers.  You may have seen your child come home with a "Time All Star" award or "A Magic Money Counter" award.  By the end of second grade it is so important that the children are able to tell time and work with money.  These students have been really working hard to master these skills.

Science:  We are just getting ready to start our habitat unit.  The children will each be picking an animal to research and write about over the next couple of months.  They will work in cooperative groups to build a habitat and explore the world around them.

Health:  Ms. Heather is back this year!  She is from OSU and will be coming in once a week to talk to the kids about nutrition and exercise! Please watch for healthy recipes to come home and ask your kids about what they learned from Ms. Heather on Tuesdays!

Look what happened during the magic hand experiment!
