I want to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the classroom that your child will be spending the next 10 months in. Parent involvement and communication in very important to me. Hopefully this blog will keep you up to date on things that are happening in the classroom and you can communicate with your child about what they are doing in school.
It seems like the beginning of the year people always have questions about the same things so I will outline a few of them here.
Homework: Every Friday your child will bring home a Friday journal. These are due back on Monday the following week. Please see inside cover of the Friday journal for more information.
On Monday your child will bring home their homework packet. These packets focus on the sound spelling we are working on for the week and the reinforce the math concepts. Your child should not be spending more then 20 minutes a day on this work. If they are please let me know. I also ask that every child reads 20 minutes daily.
Classroom Management: I use a website called Class Dojo to help manage classroom discipline. The children can earn positive or negative points depending on the choices they make in the classroom. Hopefully you all received the invitation to connect that came home last week. I will also be sending an email to all parents with more information and a link for you to connect to Class Dojo so you too can keep up to speed on what is happening behavior wise for your student. Also at the end of each day I have the children reflect on how they feel their day went. They record their thoughts and then at the end of the week I will send those home so you can see how they are feeling about their behavior. This week they were on orange paper.
Enrichments: We will have PE, Music, Library, PlayWorks and Art this year to enrich the work that we are doing in the classroom. The schedule will be as follows:
P.E. with Ms. Bonbright - Friday
Music with Ms. Underhill - Mondays and Fridays
Art with Ms. Yao - Fridays
Playworks with Coach Ruby - Wednesdays
Counseling with Ms. Dawso - Thursdays
Library with Ms. Whiteside - Tuesdays
School Supplies: We use all of the school supplies as community supplies. The children will sit at tables with no desk space to store things. Please do not send extra supplies to school with your child. A number of you have asked about extra supplies besides what was in their backpacks. I will sending home a list soon however if you are eager to purchase I know we can always use pencils, pink erasers, glue sticks and clorox cleaning wipes.
After School Pick Up: After school I will release children to an adult on the back playground. Whoever is picking up your child needs to be listed on the reg form. Please make changes at the beginning of the year and update if need be.

BUILDING OUR GUMDROP AND TOOTHPICK STRUCTURES
The children had 15 minutes to build a structure out of 25 gumdrops and 50 toothpicks. At the 15 minute mark I measured how tall their stand alone structure was.
SirTaurus and Kysen's tower came in the tallest at 10 inches!
SOLO CUP PYRAMID ACTIVITY
In this activity the children had to transform their structure without touching their cups with their hands. They had to work together using their tool to get the 6 cups into a pyramid shape. It was a lot more difficult then it seemed.
